We often rely on the same old eggplant parmesan and veggie burger routines. So let’s change that. Here is a list (in no particular order) of the best vegetarian dinner dishes in the city.
1 Vegetarian Bibimbap
In a severely limited vegetarian scene, Buddha’s vegetarian bibimbap is an absolute standout. A mass of hot rice topped with a gingery soy sauce, a mountain of veggies, and a fried egg that oozes into the mix when poked – it’s comforting, filling, and tasty.
2 Portobello Fajitas
El Catrin’s first floor is almost exclusively dedicated to tequila, mezcal, and mezcal-based cocktails. The second floor is where the fajitas are cooked. Their meaty counterpart are tender strips of marinated steak served on a sizzling skillet – but it’s the marinated Portobello fajitas that steal the show.
3 Kohlrabi Soup
If you are still feeling the bitter cold of winter, this is the dish for you. A chilled puree of Kohlrabi that will remind you of potato but with none of the guilt – it’s light, tasty, and incredibly refreshing.
4 Baby Kale Salad
Few things go together better than cheese and nuts (trout and almonds, beans and bacon, etc). Little Creatures’ baby kale salad is a tasty mix of Havarti cheese, almonds, beetroot chips & cranberries that go perfectly with the tangy vinaigrette.
5 Vegan Gnocchi
The vegan gnocchi at Cutler & Co is an absolute joy. With lumps of roasted pumpkin, fresh rocket, and a few generous dollops of an incredibly creamy white sauce, it’s the perfect hearty winter dish.
6 White Mushroom Bouillon w/ Truffle Oil
It’s hard to go past Mamasita’s mushroom bouillon. While the crispy shallots are a delicious topping for any soup, it’s the rich mushroom broth that will have you coming back for more.
7 Vegetable Platter at North Bondi Fish
Forget dining with Poseidon – nothing is more impressive than a huge platter of veggies at the foot of Bondi Beach. And none impress quite like North Bondi Fish’s offering. For a relatively cheap price, you get a plate piled high with asparagus, beans, cherry tomatoes to name a few – it’s the perfect light summer dish.
8 Spaghetti Pangrattato at Gami
It isn’t hard to make spaghetti and meatballs taste good – but that doesn’t mean it’s not impressive. Gami’s take on the Italian classic is a delicious mix of crunchy breadcrumbs, parmesan, and basil that adds a lovely depth to what would otherwise be an ordinary plate of pasta.
9 Whole Roasted Cauliflower at The Unicorn
The Unicorn may have been around for almost 20 years, but it still packs a punch with its menu. The whole roasted cauliflower is as impressive as it gets – and the perfect vegetarian dish to impress your best meat-loving mate.
10 Yam Fries at Ms. G’s
Most sweet potato fries are deeply fried, so the fact that Ms. G’s yam fries are oven-baked makes them all the more impressive. Crispy, light, and served with a tangy homemade sauce (that is also vegan) – it’s one hell of a great dish.
